Im sure you may have heard over the weekend that Instagram has introduced a new algorithm that will control what is shown in your Instagram feed. You may have seen an influx of images that were posted encouraging people to “turn on notifications” so that businesses and Instagram Celebrities would not disappear from their follower’s feed. There seems to a lot of misconception out there about how the new algorithms will work which was followed by a knee jerk reaction. We don’t think it’s in your best interest to post an image of this nature and here is why.
First of all, the new algorithm won’t actually be implemented for a few months, secondly even when it does go into play, people who follow you will still see you in their feed. The only difference now is depending on how much they interact with you (like or comment on your posts) will determine where you show up in their feed - first or down the line a little. Again, let us remind you that you will still show up in their feed. Having said that, we know you want to be first in that line, everyone does, and the key to that is your content.
The new algorithm will show people the feeds of those they interact with the most so the key is, and always has been, posting great content that attracts loyal followers, not asking them turn on a notification. In fact, turning on that notification could potentially back fire. If followers start turning on notifications, they are going to get bombarded with alerts on their phones notifying them every single time a post is made. Let’s face it, this will get old really quick and what will they do? They will turn off the notification. What will this tell the algorithm? That they’re not very interested in your feed and you slip down the line of what they see first and most often. So basically it comes down to knowing your brand, knowing your followers, and posting quality content that keeps your followers engaged.
